Attached to USS Ranger (CV-4) on 1 July 1938, the squadron was officially designated as the Ranger Air Group following its commissioning in 1934. VF-4, VB-4, VS-41 and VS-42 will initiate the descent of Carrier Air Wing One from San Diego to Monterey, CA. The Ranger was the first Navy ship to be designed and built as an aircraft carrier and paved the way for the creation of air groups. 2013 also marked 50 years since Carrier Air Group ONE (CVG-1) was officially designated as Carrier Air Wing ONE (CVW-1) on 20 December 1963.
Operation Atlantic When the US entered World War II, USS Ranger participated in the North African campaigns OPERATION TORCH and OPERATION LEADER. Operation TORCH was the most ambitious naval operation undertaken at that time in the European-African theater. The main responsibility was anti-patrol and escort in the North Atlantic. VF-9 and VF-41 headed for French Morocco and found themselves dog-fighting French pilots, some of whom became aces in the Battle of France against the Luftwaffe. Ranger fighters comprised 16 French fighters, raiding enemy shipping and airfields and providing air cover for landing operations. Attacks on shore batteries and French shipping continued in support of Allied forces and demonstrated to German-dominated French military leaders the astonishing power of the carrier task force. On 4 October 1943, OPERATION LEADER launched a carrier attack on the coast of Nazi-held Norway, where Ranger was operating as part of the British Home Fleet. The attack was a complete surprise to the Germans, who were threatened by submarines and ships, leading to fears of repeated surprise attacks by the Allied forces. This also marked the end of Ranger's combat career as she became a training carrier for the rest of the war.

In October 1944, Air Group FOUR received CVG-4 and was transferred to USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) at Saipan. They took part in the Allied invasions of several islands in the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and were part of the attacks on Tokyo in November 1944. While still in theater they were transferred to USS Essex (CV-9) and given credit. By sinking a 4-ship Japanese convoy. The group also survived a kamikaze attack on November 25, 1944 and assisted in rescue operations after Typhoon Halsey.
VMF-124 and VMF-213 would replace VB-4's top hatters in December 1944, marking the first naval squadrons to augment carrier air groups during World War II. CVG-4's actions against Japan earned two presidential unit citations. She completed her final World War II cruise in March, credited with 13 possible and 83 air kills, destroyed or damaged 297 aircraft on the ground, and sank 2 Japanese destroyers, 2 destroyer escorts, 13 merchant ships, and damaged many others. While home, CVG-4 transferred to USS Tarawa (CV-40) at NAS Atlantic City and moved to her new home port at NAS San Diego. In 1946, CNO established new postwar organizational requirements and CVG-4 was designated Attack Carrier Air Group ONE (CVAG-1).
CVAG-1 underwent a two-year period of training operations, followed by a second Westpac aboard the USS Tarawa for most of 1946-1947 and a 1948 world cruise. As the 1950s approached the transition to the jet age and VF-11 received the first F2H-1 Banshee. VF-11 and VF-12 would transition to the F2H-2 and the air wing would embark on a Med Cruise aboard the USS Coral Sea (CVB-43). From 1946 to 1957, Air Wing ONE served on nine different carriers. They flew on the Med ship USS Wasp, Franklin D. Roosevelt and the World Cruise USS Midway in 1955. CVG-1 also joined the first "super carrier" USS Forrestal in 1956 for a contingency deployment in support of the 6th Fleet. Evacuation of American citizens in response to the Suez Crisis and return to media the following year.

From June 1966 to February 1967, CVW-1 traveled aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) to conduct combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin. The Tarbox consisted of F-4 Phantoms from VF-14 and VF32; VA-12, VA-72 and VA-172's A-4 Skyhawks, VAH-10 A-3B and VQ-1 EA-3B Skywarriors, VAW-12 E-1 Tracers, VFP-62 RF-8G Crusaders and HC - 2 UH-2A Seasprites. They started with no warm-up period from Yankee Station on August 10 and completed the first line period on September 12. VA-72 conducted the first successful strike against an SA-2 missile installation in North Vietnam. Many other strikes destroyed North Vietnamese targets, but not without consequences. A total of four aircraft were lost during the first line period, all but one of the crew was KIA. After a port visit to Yokosuka, Japan and a dry dock repair at NAS Atsugi, Tarbox began a second line period from 11 October to 1 November. VA-172 and VA-72 each lost an aircraft whose pilots were captured and taken prisoner. VA-12 lost two A-4s in a mid-air collision, killing both pilots, including CO, CDR Robert S. Frosio. After a port visit to Subic Bay, they returned with a third line from 24 November to 27 December. VA-172 lost two A-4s to SAMs in the Red River Delta. Both pilots were KIA, including CO, CDR Bruce A. Nystrom. Two weeks later, a VA-72 A-4 was shot down with the pilot KIA in a 42-aircraft Alpha strike over North Vietnam. Later that day, a VAW-12 E-1B crashed in the South China Sea, killing three of the five crew members.
