The F-106 all-weather fighter was developed based on the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger. Originally designated the F-102B, it was redesignated the F-106 because it had extensive structural changes and a more powerful engine. The first F-106A flew on 26 December 1956, and deliveries to the Air Force began in July 1959. Production ended in the late 1960s after 277 F-106As and 63 F-106Bs had been built. The F-106 used the Hughes MA-1 electronic guidance and fire control system. After takeoff, the MA-1 could be moved to the appropriate altitude and position for attack. It can then launch Genie and Falcon missiles, intercept the attack, and return the aircraft to the vicinity of its base. The pilot took control of the landing again.

The AIR-2 Genie was designed to prevent the saturation of US skies with large bursts of Soviet bombers launched on a collision course with a target, and due to its relatively large kill zone, it was either detonated or cloaked. a target or target to be flown to. With a 1.5 kiloton warhead, the AIR-2 had a maximum lethal radius of about 1,000 feet for an airframe. U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Bill Rutledge, U.S. Air Force (ret.), is a former F-106 pilot, and while he never fired a "live" Genie, he replaced the ATR-2A, a Genie with some ballast. but installed with tracking equipment. Rutledge relayed his impressions of firing the ATR-2A to Ted Spitzmiller, who reported it in his Century Series book The USAF Quest for Air Supremacy in the 1950s and 1960s: “It was amazing, an 832-pound rocket with a thrust of 35,000 pounds , rocket engine. When that rocket engine went off, a trail appeared in front of my plane. The standard payload for the F-106 was four AIM-4 Falcons (two G-models with thermal guidance; two F-models with radar guidance) and a Genie. The primary weapon was the Genie, an air-to-air nuclear missile. According to Rutledge, the fire control system calculated the launch point and heading for the correct launch, measured the flight time to detonation and automatically launched the AIR-2A Genie. this was because the pilot had set the correct switches. The pilot then performed one of several evasive maneuvers to protect himself from the fireball and additional shock wave, depending on altitude.

Another former Delta Dart pilot, Daniel R. “Dr” Zoerb recalled his experience with the ATR-2A: “We flew the Genie against high-speed, high-altitude drones, the most challenging of which was the Bomarc at about 70,000 feet and Mach 2.5. Feel the opening of the weapons compartment door. , the "bang" as the 850-pound rocket fell out of the bay, and the roar (even in the cockpit) as the rocket motor fired was a great experience, as was the speed and smoke trail that allowed you to make visual contact with the rocket until the burst was held detection charge. As far as I remember, the distance to the target when the rocket was launched...at a high altitude was about 7-8 nm. In the rocket, the engine burns for two seconds to twice the Mach flight (which is about 1, it was Mach 5) accelerated. .. a real bullet!

As Zoerb explained, because the Genie was a nuclear-powered missile, detonating it near any enemy aircraft would adversely affect its electronics, structural integrity, or the target's desire to continue its mission. The effect on friendly fighters unaware of Jin's flight would also be unpleasant, as (at least) temporary blindness was the biggest fear. Therefore, the eye patch was worn by F-106 crews in life jackets in the hope of preserving vision in at least one eye.

The F-106 was also a very fast aircraft with super-cruise capability, as Mark Foxwell, another former Delta Dart pilot, explained: “I recently visited the 27th Fighter Squadron at Langley flying the F-22 they were flying. They described the Raptor's super-cruise capabilities. where they use AB to make it good and then use supersonic cruise in the military. Well, I/we did it regularly on the Six (as the F -106 pilot called it); I would take full AB to 49,000 and Mach 1.5 and then full throttle and go 500 miles or more.'

Finally, Foxwell believes that the F-106 was also a better equipped fighter-bomber than today's aircraft, as the Delta Dart was optimized for its job of defending against Soviet bombers more than ever in its day and even more so today. In fact, he explains, even though the F-15 and F-16 have (and still have) more firepower, radar and computer capabilities than the F-22, these fighters are not optimized for the strategic air defense mission. The F-106 can match or surpass them in speed, range and endurance. According to Foxwell, in fact, "the speed and range of the 106th allowed us to accomplish more," which was certainly a Cold War victory.
